What Is The Instagram Shadowban?
The dreaded yet elusive Instagram shadowban. There is a lot of confusion about what the term “shadowban” means, if it’s a real thing, and how to remove the shadowban. If you’ve noticed that your engagement is down, you’re losing followers, or your posts aren’t appearing under the hashtags you’ve used, you may be shadowbanned. If you have been shadowbanned, don’t panic: there are methods to try and lift the ban and restore your account. Keep reading to learn all about Instagram’s shadowban. What Is The Shadowban?A shadowban is a secret ban on an account that prevents posts from being seen by anyone other than your followers. It essentially blocks your content, so users who don’t follow you cannot discover it, cutting down on your likes, followers, and hiding your post on hashtag pages. The shadowy part of the shadowban is that Instagram does not notify you that you’ve been banned; they simply block your content. Instagram denies the existence of a shadowban, but many users have argued otherwise. The following statement from Instagram alludes to complaints about a shadowban: If your engagement is down, followers are dropping off, or you notice that your hashtagged or geotagged posts don’t appear on the pages for those tags, you may be a victim of the shadowban. Am I Shadowbanned? If you’re reading this and thinking you may be shadowbanned, there are a few ways to figure out if Instagram blocked your account. Instagram does not alert you to a ban, of course, so it can be hard to tell sometimes if your engagement is bad for other reasons. If you’ve noticed the following happening to your account, it should send up some red flags that you may have been banned. Instagram Hashtags Not WorkingWhen you include a hashtag in a post, your photo or video should then appear on the page for that hashtag. If your account has been shadowbanned, however, it will not appear here. If you use hashtags, check out their topic page to see if your post appears. It may not be a top post, but if you just shared it then it should be under “Recent Posts”. If you’re trying to grow your account, hashtags are an important tool to help you reach new followers. Not being able to use Instagram hashtags may be what’s hurting your engagement if you’re shadowbanned, as it prevents anyone outside of your followers to find your post through hashtags. Instagram Won’t Let Me Follow AnyoneIf Instagram won’t let you follow any new accounts, you have very likely received the shadowban. Following too many accounts in a certain period of time sends up alerts to Instagram that you may be using services not supported by Instagram’s Terms and Conditions. If Instagram won’t allow you to follow anyone new, you’re account has probably been blocked. Instagram Blocked Me From LikingJust like being blocked from following users, you can be blocked from liking posts. If your account is noticeably overactive, then you may be banned from liking any more posts. Think about it – if your account is liking 300 posts an hour, it’s fair to assume that you aren’t pressing the like button yourself. If you can’t seem to like any pictures, or if Instagram sends a notification saying you’re temporarily blocked from that feature, you’ve likely been banned. Why Did I Get Shadowbanned on Instagram? If you think that your account has received the shadowban, you’re probably wondering why you’re being punished by Instagram. There are a few reasons that you may have been banned by Instagram, most of them having to do with violating some part of Instagram’s Terms and Conditions or Community Guidelines. If you’ve done the following, you may have incited an Instagram shadowban. Buying Fake FollowersBuying fake followers violates Instagram’s Terms and Conditions. Instagram is cracking down on fake followers across the board and removing inauthentic or inactive accounts, so if you purchased these followers they may have flagged your account. Using Banned HashtagsCertain hashtags have been banned by Instagram due to users posting inappropriate content or spamming the hashtag. When you view these hashtags on Instagram, you may see that recent posts have been blocked for them. If you use a banned hashtag, even unknowingly, Instagram may prevent your post from appearing on the pages of the other hashtags you used as well. This could result in a ban on the post including the hashtag, or your whole account. If you’re unsure which hashtags to avoid, check out a full list of banned hashtags here. You Were ReportedIf your account has been reported, especially multiple times, Instagram may block your account. Sometimes, when an account is reported, the entire account is shut down. In some less extreme cases, however, a shadowban is placed on the account. You should avoid posting inappropriate or offensive content regardless, but be extra wary if you think you may have been reported for something. A shadowban is bad enough, so you certainly don’t want your whole account shut down. Surpassing Instagram’s Daily or Hourly LimitsIf you’re following too many people in an hour or a day, or liking too many pictures in that timeframe, you may get shadowbanned. Instagram places limits on following, liking, and commenting to ensure that your activity is authentic and that you’re creating real connections through their app. The numbers vary, but a general rule of thumb is to not exceed 150-200 likes, 60 comments, or 60 follows/unfollows in an hour. Shadowban TestThere are a few methods you can try to confirm or deny a shadowban on your account. One method is to see if your post appears on the page of a hashtag you used. You can probably see your post either way, so try asking a friend to unfollow you and see if they can still see your post under that hashtag. If they cannot, it’s probable that Instagram is blocking non-followers from seeing your content, and you’ve been shadowbanned. You can also use a shadowban analyzer tool like Triberr. Triberr looks at your last 10 posts and assesses if your content is showing up well for other users or not. Triberr’s assessment is based mostly on hashtags, so if you don’t use hashtags this software may not work for you. How To Remove the Instagram ShadowbanIf you believe your account is shadowbanned, there is still hope. Instagram can remove the ban, so long as your account stops its suspicious behavior that got it banned in the first place. Other accounts that have been shadowbanned and made a comeback recommend these tips: Report your problems to Instagram: Instagram is often slow to assist users with issues, but it doesn’t hurt to try. Report a problem by going to Settings > Help > Report a Problem. Don’t buy fake followers: If you’ve bought a bunch of fake followers, don’t do that again. It may also be wise to remove the fake bot accounts, although this is not a confirmed fix. Remove broken or banned hashtags: If you used a banned hashtag, delete the post or at least remove the hashtag from your caption. Stay off Instagram for two days: Taking a break from Instagram can help to restore your account. Other users and social media gurus recommend at least a 48 hour hiatus from any activity on the app. The post What Is The Instagram Shadowban? appeared first on Social Buddy. via Blogger http://iamsocialbuddy.blogspot.com/2019/03/what-is-instagram-shadowban.html March 29, 2019 at 02:23PM
What Is Engagement on Social Media?
If you’re new to the world of social media marketing, you’ve probably seen the term “engagement” used over and over. This kind of engagement has nothing to do with diamond rings and weddings: engagement is a key metric to measure the success of social media campaigns and advertisements. Engagement is a measurement of how people interact with your posts on social media. Some factors that are included when measuring engagement are likes, comments, social shares, and others depending on your social network of choice. Considering how much time people spend on social media in 2019, a strong social media presence can drastically impact business and bring new customer leads. Social Media EngagementEngagement is a fairly self-explanatory concept: it assesses how engaged your followers are on social media. Most of us engage with others on social media every time we log in through likes, comments, clicks, and more. Social media engagement goes both ways: if you like and comment on other users’ posts, they’ll be more likely to do the same on yours. Engaging with other users can help grow your social media presence, as they will reciprocate engagement and it may also help you find new followers and accounts similar to your own. Businesses, especially, should work to engage with followers. Answering their comments and questions will improve brand loyalty and show that your business is run by real people who care about customers. Encourage customer or follower feedback by asking questions in captions and responding to their comments, messages, and questions. Why Social Engagement Is ImportantEveryone wants likes and comments on their social media posts. For the average social media user, engagement is a nice response from your family, friends, and other followers. For businesses, brands, and influencers, however, engagement is vital to social media marketing campaigns and brand image. Engagement provides businesses with a measure of how their posts perform for their audience. High engagement rates can show an active, interested following that will hopefully lead to sales. Low engagement reveals a disinterested audience, which could push others away from your social media and, in turn, business. Imagine you stumble upon a new business on social media. If their posts don’t have many likes or comments, you may think the business is not popular or experienced, and therefore not worthy of your business. If their posts have lots of likes, satisfied comments, and helpful information from the company, however, you would likely be more inclined to stay on the page, visit their website, or potentially become a customer. Engagement is important to brand image on social media, which can help with finding new leads, maintaining a relationship with current followers and customers, making sales, and more. Engagement can also help social posts rank higher based on algorithms like Instagram’s algorithm, which places better performing posts higher on users’ feeds or on the explore page. Social Media Engagement RatesEngagement on social media comes in many forms. The fundamental markers of engagement are likes and comments, but different social media platforms include different metrics. We’ll break down what Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter consider engagement. Instagram: There are a few methods to calculate engagement rates on Instagram. Instagram’s measurement defines engagements as likes, comments, and saves on a post. Engagement rate is calculated by adding those factors together and dividing by the total number of impressions. Some Instagrammers choose to include or omit elements like saves and shares, however, so there are different ways to look at engagement. Facebook: Facebook considers engagements to be likes, comments, shares, and clicks on links, photos, or videos within a post. To calculate engagement rate, Facebook adds these up and divides by the post’s total reach. Twitter: Twitter engagements consist of retweets, favorites, replies, follows, tweet expansion, or clicks on links, hashtags, embedded media, the poster’s username or profile picture. These engagements are added up and divided by total impressions to calculate an engagement rate. Average Engagement Rates on Social MediaI understand what engagement is, but what’s a good engagement rate? If you’re wondering what the average engagement rate is per platform, there are studies which have looked into that exact question. Engagement differs across different social networks. Instagram is known for having higher rates of engagement across the board compared to platforms like Facebook and Twitter. Engagement also differs when you compare different industries or different types of accounts; Instagram influencers, for example, see significantly high engagement, usually over 8%. Normal businesses don’t always see the same results, however, likely due to the high volume of general followers they accumulate. One study by Rival IQ reveals a yearly benchmark report that looks at 1800 businesses across 12 industries to assess average engagement rates. The 2019 report (which actually looks at the full 2018 year) shows relatively low engagement rates, but it is important to keep in mind that they businesses surveyed had huge followings. Having a lot of followers is not a bad thing, but it increases the number that you divide by when calculating engagement rate, which can reduce the overall rate. According to the yearly report, the average engagement rate for businesses on Facebook is 0.09%. Twitter’s engagement rate is even lower, at 0.048%. Instagram, as predicted, has significantly higher engagement rates, clocking in at 1.60%. Improve Social Media EngagementBusinesses are always striving to improve engagement on their social media posts. There are various factors that influence engagement, so boosting it can be complex. How To Make a Second Instagram Account
Looking to learn how to add an account on Instagram? If you already have an Instagram account, creating a second one is easy. Instagram allows users to have 5 accounts on the same device, and you can switch between accounts without logging in and out each time. The same email or phone number cannot be attached to more than one account, however.
Why Have Two Instagram Accounts? You may be wondering why someone would need a second Instagram account. Many people on Instagram have personal accounts where they share pictures of their daily lives with friends and family online. Most businesses also have Instagram accounts, however, and many Instagram users create second accounts for their businesses. A second Instagram account can have many purposes. One simple reason to make a second account is if you get locked out of an original account, or if you lose the account for some other reason. A second account may just be a fresh start. Many users have a second account called a finstagram, or finsta for short. These are funny, casual accounts where people share pictures that weren’t worthy of their real Instagram. Instagram influencers and bloggers often have second accounts, one personal, one based on their business or blog topic. Instagram blogs tend to be very focused on their niche industries, be it fitness bloggers, beauty bloggers, or other specific industries. For this reason, these bloggers often have a second account for their general or personal posts. Regardless of why you need a second Instagram account, we’ll walk you through the process of creating your new account. Create an Instagram Business AccountInstagram reports that over 25 million businesses have an Instagram account for their brand. Business accounts on Instagram get extra features, called Instagram Insights, that reveal data about each post’s impressions, reach, and your account’s audience. If your second account is for your business, convert to a business profile. You can do so by going to Settings > Account Settings > Switch to Business Profile. Use Instagram to grow your business through social media marketing, or create Instagram ads to use this popular platform to as a lucrative advertising tool. How To Add an Account on InstagramTo add a new account on Instagram, you’ll need to use a different email address or phone number from your first account. This is a minor inconvenience, but not too hard to work around. If you used your email for your first account, you could simply use your phone number for the second. If not, you may need to create a new email account for your new Instagram account. Follow these steps to add a second Instagram account:
From here, you can create a username, add a profile picture and bio and begin sharing on your new account. How To Switch Accounts on InstagramOnce you have two (or more) Instagram accounts, you’ll need to be able to switch between them. Luckily, Instagram makes this process easy; you won’t have to log out and log back in every time you want to check out your other account. Instagram allows five accounts to be linked on one device. Once you’ve created a new account on your device, you should be automatically logged into both. To switch from one account to another, follow these steps:
You can also switch accounts from any tab on Instagram by holding down the profile picture icon in the bottom right corner. The same menu will pop up for you to choose from. How To Link Instagram AccountsOnce you’ve created a second account on the same phone as your first account, the two are linked on your phone. This makes it easy to switch back and forth. While your accounts are linked via the app you logged into both on, they are not tied together publicly on Instagram. If you want to create a connection between these two accounts, you’ll have to promote each account on the other. One way to do this is to tag the opposite account in your bio to send followers from one account to the other. You can also tag your new account in posts and stories to establish a connection and hopefully help followers reach your second account. With two accounts, you’ll receive notifications for both. You can change your settings to turn off push notifications for one or both accounts if you wish. If not, your notifications will appear preceded by the account they relate to in brackets: [iamsocialbuddy] Erin liked your post. What’s A Finsta? The Art of The Finstagram
On social media, we tend to share only our best pictures and our best selves. Instagram is often seen through rose-colored glasses (aka filters), as users try to show off the best parts of their lives, favorite outfits, and perfectly edited selfies. Instagram is a fun platform to share our favorite pictures, but our lives off the ‘gram are not always so cute. Social media does not capture our true lives, only the high points. That’s why people turned to finstagrams. Finstagram isn’t a different app, but rather a different account on Instagram. Many users make second Instagram accounts, called Finstagrams, where they share the ugly truth, embarrassing stories, and more. Fake + Instagram = FinstagramA finstagram, or “finsta” is simply a second account, known as your fake instagram. While your real Instagram account (rinsta to some) is full of cute, happy pictures, your finsta showcases the opposite. Most finstagram owners are young, and more often than not, female. Finstagrams show off your ugliest pictures, funny stories, or embarrassing moments. Finstas are usually private, as most of us probably only want to share certain pictures with our friends. Setting strict privacy on finstagrams also allows users to post things they wouldn’t want their parents or employers to see. Social media can be exhausting. Scrolling through your social media apps can lead to feelings of FOMO, low self-esteem, or worse. Many people struggle as they compare their normal lives to the more exciting-looking lives of those on Instagram. It’s important to remember that social media is curated – everyone has boring days, bad days, and generally days that aren’t worth posting about. Finstagrams serve as a fun reminder that everyone’s life is messy on the other side of the camera. What To Post On a FinstagramMost finsta posts are funny, ugly, embarrassing, or just a little too real. Finstagram is the place to post your under-the-chin selfies, the video of you dancing on a bar, or a long-captioned story of how you failed your latest math test. Since only your closest friends follow your finsta, this second account allows you to post your true thoughts and feelings, even if they’re not pretty. We’ve compiled some examples of finstagram posts to give those without a second account a better understanding. Usernames are blurred to protect the innocent. Some ideas of what to post on your finsta include: Ugly selfies (nostrils included) Regrettable alcohol consumption The time you took a tumble Hangover cures …and whatever this is. There’s no wrong way to post on finsta – it’s whatever you make of it. The Finsta ChallengeThe Finsta challenge is a list of items, usually on a 30 day schedule, that users are challenged to post on their finstagram. Many finstagrams do not stick to this schedule, or they don’t post a finsta challenge at all. If you’re struggling with what to post on your finstagram, the finsta challenge is a good start. There isn’t one set list of items, but some of the things featured on these challenges include:
Create Your Own FinstagramMake your own finsta today to enjoy social media without the pressure of looking good! Simply make a second Instagram account, ensure it’s set to private, follow a few friends, and post away. The post What’s A Finsta? Instagram Down Again, Facebook Facing Password Scandal
Last night, March 21st, users experienced more issues accessing and posting to Instagram. This comes shortly after the longest Instagram and Facebook outage to date, which occurred only a little over a week prior on March 13th. Instagram Down Again?
Users reported more glitches with Instagram last night, including problems viewing their direct messages, follower lists, stories, and issues posting.
The app showed jumbled lists and overlapping text, making it impossible to read direct messages and follower lists. Thousands of users reported problems with the app online, with even more users turning to Twitter to complain.
Many users saw almost blank screens with data piled up on one side of the screen in many cases, making it impossible to view stories, posts, and messages.
One user reported that updating the app fixed her issues, although it’s unclear if this strategy worked for other users.
Other users who tried to share posts during this time received error messages, while others have faced problems logging in since last week’s outage. Facebook Facing More Privacy ViolationsWhile there have not been any reports of Facebook outages, the company, which owns Instagram, is back in the news. It was revealed yesterday that Facebook stored millions of user passwords, un-encrypted and open to cyberattack. The passwords were sitting in plain text in Facebook’s data storage. They could be accessed by Facebook employees. Facebook’s Vice President for Engineering, Security, and Privacy, Pedro Canahuati, responded to the password scandal in a statement yesterday:
“To be clear, these passwords were never visible to anyone outside of Facebook and we have found no evidence to date that anyone internally abused or improperly accessed them.”
Reports say that an anonymous source stated that 600 million Facebook users may have been affected by this password visibility. Facebook has faced other controversy in the recent past, especially in 2018 when it was discovered that user information was being harvested by political consulting firm Cambridge Analytica. The company has been under fire for its misuse of customer information and cybersecurity in recent years. Buy Instagram Followers – Should You?
It’s natural to want more followers on Instagram. Some people have thousands of followers and receive the same amount of likes effortlessly, it seems. If you’ve been trying to grow your Instagram without success, purchasing followers is tempting. Buying Instagram followers is not a good idea. Most services that sell a certain number of followers per price are really only hurting your Instagram. We’ll go over the difference between fake and real Instagram followers, how buying followers works, and the right way to build up your Instagram account.
Cheap Instagram FollowersIf you sift through Google, you’ll find various services offering cheap Instagram followers. For a one-time fee, these websites will sell you anywhere from 100 to thousands of followers, sometimes only for a few bucks. If these services seem shady, it’s because they are. The followers they are peddling are almost always all fake, bot accounts. Most have weird, long usernames that are clearly fake, and they probably don’t post much if at all. Fake Instagram FollowersYou may be thinking, “so what?” Many Instagram users may not care if their followers are real people or bots, so long as their follower count is high and their Insta clout is in tact. Fake followers are easy to detect: their usernames are usually an odd, long combination of letters and numbers. They’ll have almost no posts of their own. If they do post, it’s very likely spam that could hurt your devices if you click through to their links. They won’t like or comment on any of your posts. Buying fake followers is not a good look, especially if your account is for your business or brand on Instagram. You may think having a high follower count will help, but if anyone looks deeper they’ll see that your posts get very few likes and most of your followers are fake. This tells others that your brand doesn’t have a real following, and may suggest that you don’t deserve their follow or their business. Buying Followers Is A Bad IdeaThere are a few reasons why you shouldn’t buy followers. One is that these fake accounts may eventually unfollow you, or they’ll get deleted. Instagram does not like fake accounts, and they are continually working to get rid of Instagram bots, inactive users, and fake accounts. You could pay for 1000 followers and get them initially, but those numbers will very likely drop off shortly after your purchase. Another issue with buying fake followers is that they’ll probably never like any of your posts. Sure, you’ll have a high follower count and a good follower/following ratio, but your photos won’t receive any more likes than normal. This actually hurts your engagement rate on Instagram, which will drop when you have more followers but the same amount of likes as before. 100 engaged followers are better than 1000 followers who will not interact with your posts. If bots do engage, their comments are very likely automated and therefore won’t be very relevant to your post. Users with fake followers have received comments in different languages, comments that are totally irrelevant to their content, or inappropriate comments. Sometimes the comments are ads, making it even more evident that your followers are fake. Finally, Instagram may flag your account if it sees that you are buying fake followers. As we’ve said, Instagram is working to eradicate fake users and get rid of bots, so they flag unusual bot activity. Even though your account is real, you may be flagged by Instagram for violating Instagram’s terms of service. Don’t Buy Fake Followers For Your Business or BrandBusinesses and brands on Instagram should be especially wary to purchase followers. Buying fake followers destroys your credibility, making it seem like you don’t have real fans at all. It also shows that your business cuts corners, which may negatively impact your brand. Cheap followers are fake, meaning there isn’t a real person behind those accounts. That means that your fake followers will not be buying your products or services. As a business, there really isn’t a point to market your products to fake followers. Instagram influencers are influential because they have grown a following on the platform. As an influencer, if your followers realize that you purchased fake followers to boost your account, you’ll lose credibility. Gain Instagram Followers the Right WayBuying fake followers is not the best way to grow your account. Luckily, there are plenty of other ways to get your first 1000 Instagram followers, or your next 1000. If you’re ready to spend money to build up your Instagram following, Social Buddy is an Instagram growth service that can help you get genuinely real followers. Social Buddy works by getting you real, targeted Instagram followers based on your interests and industry. With Social Buddy, you can grow your followers and improve engagement. Facebook and Instagram Suffer Severe Outages
If you use Facebook or Instagram, you probably already noticed. Yesterday (Wednesday, March 13th) both apps were down for almost the entire day, resulting in social media users turning to Twitter to complain. The outages began Wednesday morning, lasting until late Wednesday night for Instagram and into Thursday morning for many Facebook users. Users faced issues loading pages, logging in, and sharing anything on the sites. Both the mobile apps and the desktop versions were unusable. What Happened to Facebook and Instagram? So far, we’ve received no update as to what happened to these apps, both of which are owned by Facebook. Whatsapp, a popular texting app also owned by the company, also faced outages. Some users noted that apps connected through Facebook, like Tinder and Spotify, also faced issues with logging in. Facebook and Instagram were silent for most of Wednesday, while users across the globe reported issues and complained on unaffected social media networks like Twitter. Eventually, Facebook and Instagram turned to their social media rival, Twitter, as well to update users.
We’ve yet to learn what caused these outages. The only update we’ve seen is from Instagram, with this pithy GIF-infused tweet:
Facebook Under InvestigationThe outages come at an interesting time for Facebook, as the company is facing a federal criminal investigation over sharing user data with other tech companies like Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, and Samsung. From their newsroom account last night, amid the #FacebookDown and #InstagramDown debacle, Facebook tweeted the following:
Social Media Users Turn To TwitterSocial media users turned to Twitter for information and to poke fun at these apps and at many users’ admitted dependence on them. We’ve compiled some of the best tweets in wake of the Instagram and Facebook blackouts.
Instagram models took some heat during the outages, as Twitter users joked about their lost income during the blackout.
Even Cardi B joined in on the fun, teasing fans that she revealed a “big surprise” on Instagram while the app was down and her fans could not access it.
Both Instagram and Facebook are up and running for most users today, but still no word on why the outages occurred. Until we have more information from Facebook, we’ll have to stick to jokes and keep waiting.
