How To Go Live on Instagram
“Going live” on Instagram refers to starting a live-streamed video on an Instagram story. Instagram live allows for more direct interaction, as it gives a live look into your day. Users who go live can also respond to comments as they come in, making this a great tool to improve engagement or share news on Instagram.
Instagram LiveInstagram live was originally introduced in 2017, but in the two years since its inception it has grown in both popularity and available features. We’ll break down the basics of how to use Instagram live, as well as the latest features and the best practices to use this live-streaming tool on Instagram. How To Go Live on InstagramStarting a live video on Instagram is actually quite simple. Follow these steps to go live on Instagram:
The number of viewers during your Insta live video will appear at the top of the screen. Comments will pop up at the bottom. You can disable commenting by tapping the “…” and selecting “Turn Off Commenting”. You can tap “Comment” to leave your own comment. You can also pin your own comment or someone else’s to the top so that viewers can see it first. To pin a comment, simply tap the comment and select “Pin Comment”. You can also use face filters while live streaming. Next to the comment field, tap the smiley face button with three dots to try out instagram’s various filters while you record. How To Go Live With a Friend on InstagramOne of the more recent added features to Instagram live is the ability to go live with another user. With this feature, you can split the screen to share a live video. You can go live with a friend through two methods: either inviting them to join your live video, or asking to join theirs. To invite a friend to join your live stream, they must be watching the Instagram live video first. Simply start an Instagram live video like you normally would, and then tap the icon of two smiley faces overlapping ( ). Tap the name you want to invite, and if they accept then your screen will split to show both of you. If they decline, you’ll receive a notification. To join a friend’s live video, either wait for them to invite you, or request to join. You can request to join their live stream by watching it and tapping “Request” > “Send Request”. If they accept, you’ll be notified that you are about to join their live video. How To View Someone Else’s Instagram LiveVery often, you’ll receive a notification when someone you follow begins a live video. Click this notification to begin viewing their Instagram live stream. You can also view live videos in the same fashion that you view Instagram stories. If someone you follow is live, their profile picture will appear first on the bar up top that shows Instagram stories, with the same colorful ring around it and the word “LIVE”. Tap their profile picture to begin streaming their Instagram live video. Once you’re watching the video, you can like it or comment. The person live streaming will see that you have tuned in and if you like or comment, and if commenting is turned on then other viewers may also see your comments. Tips To Make The Most of Instagram LiveNow that you know how to go live on Instagram, you may be wondering what kind of video you should share or how you can make the most of your live stream. Instagram live is often used to showcase behind-the-scenes video, to talk directly to followers as they comment, or to share a more authentic, less curated video. Instagram live is a great place to share more inclusive information, let followers or customers know about news, or really do anything you want – it’s up to you. Your live video should, of course, still follow Instagram’s Community Guidelines – don’t live stream anything inappropriate, offensive, or anything that may break those guidelines, or you may be reported on Instagram. Here are a few tips to make the most out of your Instagram live video, whatever you may choose to do with it: Announce Your Live Stream Ahead of TimeShare via a post or Instagram story that you’ll be going live at a specified time. This way, followers, friends, fans, or customers can prepare ahead of time to tune in. Announcing a live video ahead of time can increase the number of people watching and improve engagement. Test Your Camera and SettingBefore you go live, take a test video in the place where you plan to record. This will help you test the lighting, angle, background, and ensure that your phone’s camera is in good shape. You should also make sure that your phone is charged so that it doesn’t die mid-live stream. Plan Your Instagram Live ScriptYou don’t have to have a carefully worded script, but make sure you know what you’re doing before you start live streaming. You don’t want viewers to be bored or confused if you’re awkwardly fumbling through a video because you did not prepare. Make sure you have a general idea of what you want to say or do before you go live. Give Your Video a TitleMany viewers may tune in halfway through or at any point during your live stream. If you’re mid sentence, they may be confused as to what you’re talking about. Giving your video a title or sharing some kind of information as to what the point of your video is about can help give context to those who miss your introduction. This is where the pinned comment feature comes in handy – you can write a comment giving the video a title or sharing general context and pin it, so it’s the first comment viewers see when they start streaming. Save It As a StoryOnce you end your Instagram live video, save it as a story. This way, more people can watch who weren’t online when it was live. You can also save the video to your camera roll and, depending on the length, share it as a post. Final ThoughtsInstagram live is a great tool to share information and engage directly with followers. How To View an Instagram Profile Picture
On most social media platforms, you can view anyone’s profile picture. On Instagram, however, you cannot view profile pictures, even for those you follow. Clicking a profile picture on Instagram will not expand it to a fuller size. Profile pictures are only clickable when someone has shared an Instagram story. Instagram users have reported confusion as to why we cannot view profile pictures, and many people try to find ways to view these images. Whatever your reason may be for wanting to view someone’s profile picture on Instagram, we’ve provided a few ways to view them.
Why Can’t I View an Instagram Profile Pic?For some unknown reason, Instagram only allows us to view others profile pictures in the tiny circle on their profile. This can be frustrating if you’re trying to look closer to figure out whose profile you’re viewing, to save your own photo if you lost it, or just to get a better look at a profile pic. Luckily, there are some tricks to view, download, or save Instagram profile pictures. How To See Someone’s Instagram Profile PictureTo view someone’s profile picture, you have a few options. One is to use a third-party website to view their profile picture; we’ll break that option down in a moment. Another way to view a profile picture is to use the desktop version of Instagram. To view someone’s Instagram profile picture, follow these steps:
This will allow you to see the profile picture in a new window. While it will still be rather small, once it’s off Instagram you can zoom in or save it. While the desktop version is slightly more simple, you can follow this same process on your phone as well. Follow these steps to view a profile picture from the Instagram app:
From the new tab, you can save the image to your phone. Instagram Profile Picture ViewerThere are also third-party services that help you view profile pictures. One such service is izuum.com. This website allows you to type in any Instagram username to view a full-sized image of their profile picture. Simply go to their website, type in a username, and a profile picture will appear in full size and good quality (not pixelated). From here, you can save the image to your phone or other device. Izuum works for both public and private Instagram accounts. Instagram Profile Picture DownloaderAnother service that will help you view a profile picture is instadp.com. Just like the other profile picture viewer, this site allows you to type in a username and view a larger version of profile pictures. This website also has a download button, making it easy to save the picture to your phone, computer, or tablet. Instadp works for both private and public profiles, and it also allows you to download Instagram stories. You can only view and download Instagram stories from public profiles, however. Ghost Followers on Instagram
Most of us are probably familiar with the phenomenon of ghosting – when someone disappears without explanation and stops talking to or interacting with another person. Ghost followers are not the people who ghosted you (although they might be some of them). Similar to the concept of ghosting, ghost followers are people who follow you on social media like Instagram, but never like, comment on, or engage with your posts. There are differing opinions on whether or not ghost followers are bad for your account, and many apps claim to be able to detect these followers. Read on to learn more about ghost followers and whether or not you should worry about them. What Are Ghost Followers?Ghost followers are people who follow you but never engage with any of your posts. Most of us probably have a lot more followers than we do likes on pictures – not all of your followers like every single one of your posts. While it’s normal that not every person sees and likes everything you share, there are some followers who never like, comment, or engage with any of your pictures or videos. These are ghost followers. Ghost followers are like ghosts in that they haunt your Instagram, in a way. They linger as followers, but much like ghosts, you don’t actually see or hear from them (in this case, through likes or comments). Ghost followers are typically either fake followers or simply inactive users. Fake FollowersHow can I tell if a follower is fake or not? Most fake accounts are fairly easy to spot. A fake Instagram account generally follows a lot of people, but has very few followers. They tend to have very few posts of their own, if any. Fake followers also have pretty obvious usernames: it’s often not a name at all, but a string of letters and numbers. If you ever bought followers, they are very likely fake. Buying fake followers is a cheap way to boost your follower count, but it ultimately hurts your Instagram. Even if you bought fake followers who were supposed to like your photos, they often only like a few before becoming ghost followers. Having fake ghost followers is useless: sure, you have more followers, but they never engage with your posts. It’s better to have a smaller, engaged following, whether your account is personal, for business, or if you’re an influencer. Inactive FollowersGhost followers can also be real people who are inactive on Instagram, or who simply don’t like your content enough to engage. These followers are less harmful than fake followers. While it’s not ideal to have followers who don’t pay attention to or engage with your content, real followers will not hurt your account. Why Are Ghost Followers Bad?You may be reading this and thinking that you’d like to have the most possible followers, regardless of whether or not they engage with you. Ghost followers are not necessarily the worst thing to have – sure, your engagement rate may be a little lower, but many Instagram users don’t pay attention to that anyway. If you aren’t aiming for a certain engagement rate or growth for your account, then ghost followers aren’t that big of a deal. Many people only use Instagram to share with friends and family, so they may not care about things like engagement. Fake followers, who are most often ghost followers, can be problematic, however. Having fake followers, especially if your acquired them by breaking Instagram’s Community Guidelines for authentic interaction, can negatively impact your account. There are a few reasons why ghost followers may be bad for your account: Ghost Followers Lower EngagementGhost followers do not like, comment, or engage with your posts. This lowers your engagement rate. As we’ve stated, some people may not care about their engagement. Businesses and Instagram influencers, however, should. When you run a business account on Instagram, engagement is an important metric to track. Having high engagement shows potential new followers and customers that others truly like your brand and enjoy the content you share. An account with high engagement will be favored by the Instagram algorithm, will be more likely to appear on Instagram explore pages, and looks better all-around. High engagement provides social proof to others that your brand is trusted and well liked, which could lead them to follow your or buy your products or services. An account with low engagement, on the other hand, may look shady, low-quality, or simply not well liked. Businesses and public figures with low engagement will do worse overall on social media and may lose followers or customers if they are turned away by the lack of engagement. Influencers, especially, need high engagement rates to secure brand deals. Instagram influencers tend to have higher than average engagement rates, so ghost followers can be especially harmful to those users. Instagram Cracks DownInstagram has announced efforts to crack down on ghost followers, although they did not use that term directly. In the past, the platform has purged fake followers, bot accounts, and other inactive users to keep Instagram social and clear of inauthentic usage. Because of this, Instagram is likely to continue to remove fake or inactive accounts. Buying ghost followers is then pointless, because they may be removed anyway. The Instagram ShadowbanThere are widely accepted rumors of an Instagram shadowban, referring to accounts being blocked for breaking Instagram’s Term and Conditions. Your account will not be deleted, but it is believed to be possible that your posts will be blocked from appearing to new users. One action that can incite a shadowban is having a lot of fake, ghost followers. The shadowban will further hurt your engagement, and could result in more issues with your account. Holding onto fake ghost followers just for the number could potentially harm your account due to the shadowban. Should I Remove Ghost Followers on Instagram?Ultimately, it is your decision to keep or remove ghost followers. If they don’t bother you and you don’t mind the drop in engagement, they are mostly harmless. Fake, bot followers should probably be removed, however, to ensure that your account is not penalized for having fake followers. You can choose to block Instagram followers, or learn how to remove Instagram followers without blocking or alerting them. Ghost Follower AppsThere are apps that claim to be able to detect ghost followers. Most do so by looking at your last few posts and finding the followers who did not like or comment on those posts. This does not always give an accurate representation of who is actually a ghost follower. Be wary to trust apps that claim to know which followers are ghosting you. Many users have reported that the names given are somewhat random, with apps telling them that their close friends are ghost followers. If you do choose to try one of these apps to get rid of ghost followers, proceed with caution. How To Hide Hashtags on Instagram
For Instagram influencers or anyone trying to grow their business on Instagram, hashtags are essential to help you reach a new audience. Using Instagram hashtags improves the reach of your posts, putting your content in front of new users. Hashtag use can lead to more followers, likes, and comments and drive more users to your website to become customers, if that is your ultimate goal. While hashtags are incredibly useful, they tend to make Instagram captions look messy. Using too many hashtags can look spammy, so while hashtags are vital to help grow your following, they don’t always look so pretty. Luckily, you can hide your hashtags for a cleaner look.
How To Hashtag on InstagramInstagram hashtags, like the hashtag function on other social media platforms, are created by typing the pound or hashtag symbol (#) followed by a word or phrase. Hashtags group posts by topic, creating Instagram explore pages with the top and most recent posts for each hashtag. Learn more about how to use hashtags with our guide to Instagram hashtags, or find the best hashtags for your industry:
Hide Instagram HashtagsIf you want to hide Instagram hashtags you’re in luck. There are two simple ways to hide your hashtags on Instagram so that your caption is not overcrowded: using spaces or placing your hashtags in a comment. While neither of these options totally eliminates the ability to view your hashtags, both do make it so that they are not clouding up your caption. Learn both ways to hide Instagram captions with examples from @iamsocialbuddy. Instagram Spacers in CaptionThe first way to hide your hashtags is by creating more space in your caption. Instagram does not allow users to type the “Enter” key effectively in captions, making it difficult to space out text in the app. To get around this issue, type your caption out in another app. An easy one to use is the Notes app that is automatically on iPhones. Instagram still will not recognize empty lines, so use a piece of punctuation or an emoji on each line and press enter. Once you’ve created enough space, copy and paste the spacers into your Instagram caption, and place your hashtags at the bottom. Our Social Buddy Instagram uses bullet points as spacers. Instagram only shows the first two lines of Instagram captions, so anyone scrolling past your post will only see the top part of the caption. To see the full caption with the spacers and hashtags, they would have to click “Keep Reading…” to extend the full caption. This effectively hides part of your caption and prevents it from appearing crowded with hashtags. Instagram Hashtags in CommentsYou can also leave your hashtags in a comment to save your caption from looking too busy. Commenting hashtags on your own posts still places those posts on hashtag pages and works the same as putting them in your caption. If you comment hashtags on other users’ posts, however, it will not attach those hashtags to the post since it is not yours. By placing hashtags in the comments, other users won’t be able to see them right away. You can see the comment if you click on the comment button or click “View All Comments”, but for the most part anyone scrolling past your post will not notice the hashtags you used. Adding Hashtags to Instagram After PostingIf you forgot to add hashtags, not to worry. You can easily add them after posting, by either editing your Instagram caption or using the method mentioned above of commenting hashtags. To comment hashtags on your own post, simply press the comment button, type out or copy and paste all your hashtags, and post the comment. Keep reading to learn how to edit your Instagram caption. Edit Instagram CaptionEditing an Instagram caption is simple. While the platform didn’t always offer this feature, it is now easily available so you can fix any typos, tag someone, or add to a caption in general. Follow these simple steps to edit your caption:

What Happens When You Report an Instagram Account?
Whether it’s a fake account spamming your posts, inappropriate or hateful content, or stolen images, there’s plenty you can report an account for on Instagram. Instagram works to keep their platform appropriate, safe, and comfortable for all its users. Unfortunately, with over 1 billion active users, it’s hard to keep up. If you ever see content that clearly violates Instagram’s Community Guidelines or makes you uncomfortable, you should report it. Even if you have reported an account before, you may not have followed up on the result. It’s often unclear what actually happens when you report an account on Instagram. Reasons to Report an Instagram AccountThere are various reasons to report someone on Instagram. Many users probably report others for lesser reasons, but anything that violates Instagram’s Terms and Conditions or Community Guidelines is valid to report. Instagram SpamWhen you report an account, two options appear. The first is “It’s Spam”. Clicking this will automatically block the reported account, so you will no longer see their content and they cannot see yours. An account is considered spam if it posts excessively, posts a lot of comments (usually irrelevant ones that don’t make sense), or for similar behavior that is inauthentic. Inappropriate Content on InstagramThe other option that appears when you click the “Report” button is “It’s Inappropriate”. This option takes you to a second page, where you can give more details about why you are reporting the account. There are a few options that appear first. Some are less serious than others, so depending on how you report the account, Instagram may take more or less action.
How To Report on InstagramReporting someone on Instagram is relatively simple. You have the option to report an entire account, a specific post, a comment, a direct message, or a story. Reporting an account on the app does not allow for much detail from users about exactly what is inappropriate. Some have found more success emailing Instagram support at [email protected], while others say that they will never get back to you. Report Instagram AccountTo report an Instagram account, follow these steps:
Report a Post on InstagramTo report a single post on Instagram, follow these simple instructions:
Report a Comment on InstagramIf a specific comment makes you uncomfortable, is spam, or is inappropriate, you can report that comment. Follow these simple steps:
Report a Direct Message on InstagramIf someone is sending you unwanted direct messages, you can report the entire account or block them. You can also report individual messages, however, so that Instagram sees exactly what was inappropriate about their use of the platform. Follow these steps to report a DM.
Report an Instagram StoryInstagram stories have become wildly popular on the platform, and they can also be reported. To report an Instagram story, follow these steps:
What Happens When You Report Someone on InstagramInstagram reviews reports, but it isn’t always clear how quickly they act. Afterall, there are definitely many reports made on accounts that are not violating Instagram’s rules. While writing this blog post, I accidentally reported an innocent account. Instagram responded to my report within 10 minutes with the following message: Many who report actual misuse on Instagram never hear back. Some have found that the accounts they reported disappeared later, but without any insight from Instagram as to whether they deleted it or found any inappropriate activity. If you only reported a post or a comment, it is more likely that, if your claim was true, Instagram will delete it. Deleting an entire account is more drastic, however, and generally takes more time and evidence. Often an account is only suspending from posting as a result of an Instagram report. Others believe that a report can lead to the Instagram shadowban, although its existence is debated and unconfirmed. The process of reporting on Instagram is tedious and often unsuccessful for many. If you’re having trouble getting Instagram to respond to a report, try reporting again or asking friends to report the same account or post to grab the platform’s attention. When You Report Someone on Instagram is It Anonymous?Yes, when you report on Instagram it is anonymous. The person you reported will not be notified that you reported them (if they get notified at all, which remains unclear). There is one known exception to this rule: if you report someone for copyright infringement or for stealing your intellectual property, Instagram may notify that person of your name and email. This is done for legal reasons, as they may want to contest your ownership of the content. How To Un-Report on InstagramThere isn’t a way to undo a report once it has been sent. If the report was an accident, incorrect, or you filed it in a moment of passion, don’t worry. Instagram often fails to follow through on real reports, so if there’s nothing inappropriate it likely won’t do anything to the account your reported. Reporting does often result in your account blocking the account you reported. Learn how to unblock on Instagram here if you want to follow that person again. How To Untag Yourself on Instagram
You get a notification that a friend has tagged you in a photo on Instagram, you open it, and . . . your eyes are closed in the picture. We’ve all been tagged in our fair share of bad pictures – the ones you would never post, but your friend looks good so they share it anyway. If you’ve been tagged in an unflattering picture or tagged in something inappropriate that you don’t want tied to you online, removing a tag on Instagram is simple.
How To Untag YourselfThankfully, Instagram allows you to remove a tag from another person’s post. To remove a tag of yourself on someone else’s post, follow these simple steps.
Hide Photo From ProfileAnother option instead of untagging yourself is to hide the photo from your profile. With this option, you are still tagged in the photo, but it won’t appear on your profile under tagged photos. If you don’t feel strongly enough to remove the tag altogether, hide the photo by following these instructions:
How To Untag Someone on InstagramIf you posted a photo and want to remove a tag for someone else, doing so is easy. When you tag someone on Instagram, you can remove or edit the tag immediately, as well as move the location of the tag on the photo itself. To go back later and remove or edit a tag on your own photo, do the following:
How To Delete Pictures on InstagramIf removing the tag isn’t enough, the next step is to delete the whole picture. For pictures that you posted, deleting the post is simple. Simply press the three dots at the top right corner of the picture and press “Delete” to get rid of a post you regret sharing. Unfortunately, it’s not so easy to delete a post shared on someone else’s account. While Instagram gives users control over what posts they are tagged in and what appears on their profile, you cannot control what images other people post. There is no direct way for you to delete a post shared on someone else’s account, even if you are in the photo or video. If you still really need that post gone, you have two options: Ask! If the photo is that upsetting to you, and assuming it was a friend who tagged you, simply ask them to delete the post. They might not be happy to remove a post that they wanted to share, and they may say no, but it doesn’t hurt to try. Report the photo. If you’ve exhausted your other option and you’re committed to getting that post removed, you can try reporting the photo. Instagram is often slow to respond to reports, and they very likely won’t take action if you only want it removed because it’s unflattering. If you truly want the post deleted, it’s still worth a shot. To report a photo, click the three dots at the top right corner of the image and tap “Report Photo”. A pop-up menu will make you choose between “It’s Spam” and “It’s Inappropriate” before taking you to a page with more options to report the issue with the image. View Tagged Photos on InstagramFor those of you reading and wondering if there are any unsavory photos you should go back and check on, viewing your tagged photos is simple. To check out your tagged photos, go to your profile and tap the icon. You can also view other users’ tagged photos by clicking the same button on their profile. Set Instagram Tagging PermissionsTo save you from removing future tags, you can adjust your tagging permissions in your Instagram settings. There are two settings for tagging on Instagram: “Add Automatically” and “Add Manually”. Most accounts are set to “Add Automatically” by default. This allows people to tag you in photos and lets the photos appear automatically on your profile. The “Add Manually” option sends you a notification when you’ve been tagged and allows you to approve or disapprove it before it appears on your profile. To adjust your tagging permissions, follow these steps:
On this same screen, you can click “Hide Photos and Videos”, which will take you to a screen of all your tagged images. Here, you can choose which ones you want to hide in bulk. Banned Instagram Hashtags
Have you ever used a hashtag on an Instagram post and then realized that it didn’t work and your post did not appear on the page for that hashtag? If so, you’re not alone. There are banned hashtags on Instagram, the use of which has been flagged by the platform. Usually hashtags are banned for inappropriate use, or for use that somehow violates Instagram’s Community Guidelines. Some believe that using these banned hashtags can result in the Instagram shadowban, while others discount the shadowban entirely. Regardless, some hashtag usage is undeniably blocked on Instagram. Check out the full list of banned hashtags for 2019.
Instagram Hashtags Not WorkingIf you’ve used or searched for a hashtag and found that there are no recent posts, it’s likely that that hashtag has been banned. It’s important to remember that some hashtags may be banned forever, while some may only be temporarily blocked. There are a few concrete reasons that we know hashtags have been banned for. Here are some of the known reasons for banned hashtags:
You can tell if a hashtag is not working or banned by searching for the hashtag and looking for recent posts. Temporarily banned hashtags will have the following message: Temporarily banned hashtags may, at some point, work again. You can still view the page for these hashtags and the top posts. Recent posts will not be shown, however, defeating the point of using the hashtag. Permanently banned hashtags won’t show up at all when you search for them. If they do appear, some of the more serious and harmful ones may show this message: Instagram ShadowbanUsing banned hashtags can result in an Instagram shadowban, many believe. Essentially, your account will be blocked so that it won’t appear on any hashtag pages so that no one but your followers can see your posts. Using a banned hashtag can also result in none of your hashtags working, even if the others are not banned. Learn more about the shadowban here, and search any new hashtags before using them to ensure that they are not banned. List of 2019 Banned Instagram Hashtags
